XF105 Canon Camcorder

the Canon XF105 HD Professional Camcorder is a compact, full-featured portable video camera that imports almost all the features and functionality of the 3-chip XF305 into a smaller single sensor form factor. Its 1/3" CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV III image processor combine to support 1920 x 1080 resolution videos at 24p, 30p or 60i, which are recorded to Compact Flash cards using CANON 's XF codec (MPEG-2 4:2:2) at bit rates up to 50 Mbps. The camcorder is equipped with a newly developed 10x HD video lens that provides a 35mm equivalent zoom range from 30.4 to 304mm.
Other key features of the XF105 include infrared recording and, when used in combination with other stereoscopic capability XF105 or XF100--3D. The combination of professional image quality, manual controls and portability makes the XF105 the ideal tool for a wide range of applications, including ENG, travel documentaries, standalone features and event videography. The camera also features HD/SD-SDI, genlock and SMPTE timecode terminals, expanding its range of uses to live and multi-camera productions.

• Canon Native 1920 x 1080 CMOS Image Sensor

Designed and manufactured exclusively by CANON, the XF105 incorporates a native 1/3", 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor, providing excellent Full HD video recording with minimal noise. Slow and fast motion shots are supported for greater flexibility in creative choice.

• DIGIC DV III CANON Image Processor

The XF105 features CANON's DIGIC DV III image processor, which provides enhanced shading, realistic tonal gradations, new custom image settings, and lower power consumption. DIGIC DV III is also the high-speed motor that powers Genuine CANON face detection. Cameramen on the go will appreciate the ability to track a topic in a crowd of people.

• Multiple bitrates, resolution, and frame rates

Multiple recording modes, resolutions and frame rates make the XF105 creative and capable of working in virtually any production environment. From the highest quality of 50 Mbps Full HD to the compatible HDV of 25Mbps, users will find the camcorder capable of accepting any job. The camcorder supports 1920 x 1080 resolution video at 24p, 30p and 60i, as well as 1280 x 720 video at 24p, 30p and 60p.

• MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps codec (CANON XF Codec)

Canon's XF Codec is an adaptation of MPEG-2 for broad compatibility with existing industry infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. The XF105 supports Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution at a bit rate of up to 50 Mbps with 4:2:2 color sampling.

• MXF container

The XF105 uses the Material Exchange Format (MXF) for its file structure: an internationally standardized container format for the exchange of audio and video material. Using the MXF format, video and audio can be wrapped in a single file along with important metadata. With MXF, the XF105 will not only benefit from a high level of compatibility with NLE systems, but also with the high-end network systems used by many networks and production studios.

• 4:2:2 color sampling

The 4:2:2 color sample provides twice the color resolution of HDV and other codecs that use 4:2:0 color sampling. 4:2:2 provides ultra-fine transitions in tone and color, and maintains the highest quality image for use in post-production processes such as chroma inlay, color graduation, advanced composition, and effects.

• Record to Compact Flash Cards

The XF105 registers cost-effective and readily available Compact Flash (CF) cards. The camcorder features two CF card slots and offers versatile recording features including repeat recording, hot swapping, file copying and backup, and pre-recording.

File-based recording facilitates workflow by reducing transfer times when moving video to non-linear editing (NLE) systems. In addition, metadata can be entered into the image acquisition, and images can be reviewed immediately after recording to ensure that each shot is captured and recorded correctly.

• 10x HD CANON lens

The XF105 uses an original 10x CANON zoom lens that provides flexibility in capturing images with a zoom range of 30.4 to 304 mm (equivalent to 35 mm). Motorized zoom is available in constant and variable settings in 3 modes: fast (about 1.9 - 60 seconds), normal (about 3.0 - 180 seconds) and slow (about 4.0 - 285 seconds).

• HD-SDI output, Genlock and SMPTE timecode

In addition to providing the professional user with full control over the image, the XF105 CANON also provides complete creative freedom when it comes to inputs and outputs. It features industry-standard HD-SDI output and a genlock/time code terminal (BNC style), making it suitable for multi-camera or 3D productions. Other entrance fees include:

• Built-in 3D support features

The XF105 has the ability to pair with another XF105 or XF100 camcorder to provide true stereoscopic 3D recording. It offers several features to help with 3-D production, including OIS lens switching to help optically align the two camcorders. A focal length guide shows the zoom position of each camera relative to each other and calibrates the approach distance.

The compact size of the XF105 provides an alternative to large 3D equipment that allows 3D crews to work faster and more efficiently, while providing the features to capture high-quality 3D images.

• Infrared recording

The XF105 features an infrared mode that allows users to capture video in conditions with little or no ambient light, a situation that would render other video cameras useless. During infrared capture, the infrared cut filter is removed from the optical path. Combined with a specially designed lens coating, infrared light can pass to the image sensor. In addition, the XF105 features an infrared emitter with a diffuser to shoot pleasant infrared images, even in complete darkness.

• Ergonomics

The XF105 is designed as an ultra-compact camcorder without compromising features and usability. Its small size makes this camcorder ideal in situations where every inch and ounce counts, such as flying to a location or making an expedition. It offers amazing image quality, but can be carried in a backpack, making the XF105 ready to go almost anywhere.

• Neutral density filter

For added versatility, the XF105 offers a built-in gradation-type neutral density (ND) filter (approximately 1/8).
SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer
The XF105 also features a newly designed SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization (Lens Shift) system with three modes: Standard, Dynamic, and Powered.

• AF Snapshot

When shooting high-definition videos, sharp focus becomes more critical than ever. The Instant AF system, owned by CANON, combines an external AF sensor with CANON 's legendary autofocus system for fast and accurate focusing. Together, the two sensors reduce focus time, even in low-light, low-contrast, or high-brightness situations, and improve focusing performance on difficult subjects.

• 8-Blade Iris

Unlike a typical 6-leaf iris, the XF105's 8-leaf iris captures extraordinarily uniform out-of-focus "bokeh" for a more attractive image effect. The additional blades also reduce the diffraction of light passing through the iris, allowing the use of smaller apertures while maintaining image quality.
Digital Teleconverter
The Digital Teleconverter extends the range of the optical zoom, and is selectable by 1.5x, 3x and 6x. This feature is ideal when extreme telephoto shooting is needed, such as sports and wildlife, as well as surveillance apps for law enforcement and the military.

• Slow motion and fast movement

Slow and fast motion modes allow the XF105 to record a different frame rate than the playback frame rate, resulting in a slow or fast motion effect during playback. As the camera is recording real frames and modifying the playback speed, there is no loss of quality and the maximum image quality is maintained.

• Interval recording

With this feature, users can program the camera to record a specific number of frames at specific intervals. The technique can be used to observe natural phenomena for extended periods, making it ideal for time-lapse applications. The interval can be set to 25 levels ranging from 1 second to 10 minutes. It is also possible to record frames, allowing you to record a specific number of frames, ideal for projects such as clay animation.

• 3.5" 920K dot LCD monitor

A 3.5" 920,000-point LCD monitor provides a wide and accurate area for critical focus confirmation and approximately 100% of the field of view. The screen opens on the left side of the camera body.

• 260K dot electronic viewfinder

The XF105 features a 0.25" EVF, 260,000 Dot Color and approximately 100% field of view coverage for comfortable viewing and accurate composition judgment. Brightness, contrast, color and backlight are adjustable. The angle of the viewfinder can be adjusted up and down° for greater user comfort and when using the LCD screen to monitor.

• Focus help functions

With Canon's new Edge Assist Assist system, a red and green monitor is displayed at the bottom of the LCD screen and three red focus control areas are displayed on the screen. The green waveform shows the overall focus of the image, while the red waveform shows the focus status of the focus checkboxes. Through this dynamic focus feedback, the user can intuitively tune the focus in a scene and quickly change the focus zone.
