The af-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR NIKON is a super telephoto lens that is characterized by its maximum aperture of f/2.8 and sophisticated optical, autofocus and VR systems. Helping to achieve a high degree of clarity, sharpness and color accuracy, the optical design uses two extra-low dispersion elements and two fluorite elements, which also contribute to decreasing the overall weight. The individual elements also feature Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings, which control lens reflection and ghosting to improve contrast when working in bright, backlit light conditions. And for protection, a fluorine-coated meniscus glass front element that, when combined with the weather-resistant magnesium alloy cylinder, makes it possible to work in adverse conditions.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that adapts to both photo taking and movie recording, which can be manually overridden instantly by simply turning the manual focus ring. VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shakes by up to four shutter speed steps, further contributing to shooting in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting. In addition, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting speeds.

• The main super telephoto is designed for FX format F-mount NIKON cameras, however, it can also be used with DX models where it will provide a focal length equivalent to 600mm.
• The impressively bright f/2.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also allows extensive control over depth of field to isolate subjects using selective focusing techniques.
• Two elements of fluorite lenses and two of extra low dispersion work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improves the sharpness, clarity and color fidelity of the overall image; and helps minimize the overall weight of the lens.
• A layer of Nano Crystal, along with a super-integrated coating, was applied to the lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens reflection and ghosting.
• Image stabilization with Vibration Reduction helps reduce the appearance of camera vibration up to four stops of shutter speed, benefiting the use of this lens in low light conditions. In addition, a designated sport mode is well suited for working in fast-paced conditions and a tripod mode helps suppress subtle vibrations from the ground when working on a support system.
• The silent wave motor offers fast, quiet and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focus design is also used, where only groups of internal lenses move during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use, and to promote faster focusing speeds.
• The fluorine-coated front meniscus glass element provides protection to the optical system.
• The dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy lens cylinder benefits the use of the lens in adverse conditions.
• A removable tripod collar with the lens is included for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical pull orientations.
• The specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability which is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous firing speeds.
