The king of super telephotos, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is the longest lens in the NIKON line, and brings one of the most advanced optical designs, along with superior focus and VR performance and full weathering sealing. . The lens construction features a pair of extra-low dispersion glass elements along with two fluorite elements, which improve sharpness, clarity, and color reproduction by reducing a variety of aberrations. Fluorite elements also contribute to a lighter overall weight. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to the optical system to minimize reflections and ghosting when working in bright, backlit light conditions.

Beyond optics, this super tele is also characterized by a silent wave motor, which produces fast and near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. In addition to helping to shoot in fast-paced and hard-to-light situations, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shakes in up to 4.5 stops. In addition, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting speeds.

In addition to the lens itself, AF-S's TC800-1.25E ED Teleconverter is included, and its 1.25x magnification increases the effective focal length to 1000mm. Its dedicated design includes an extra-low dispersion element to maintain the optical qualities of the lens, and also retains AF and VR capabilities.

• The main super telephoto is designed for FX format F-mount NIKON cameras, however, it can also be used with DX models where it will provide an equivalent focal length of 1200mm.
• The relatively fast maximum aperture of f/5.6 helps achieve a shallow depth of field and selective focus effects to isolate subjects.
• Two elements of fluorite lenses and two of extra low dispersion work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improves the sharpness, clarity and color fidelity of the overall image; and helps minimize the overall weight of the lens.
• A layer of Nano Crystal, along with a super-integrated coating, was applied to the lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens reflection and ghosting.
• Image stabilization with vibration reduction helps reduce the appearance of camera vibration up to 4.5 stops of shutter speed, benefiting the use of this lens in low light conditions. In addition, a designated sport mode is well suited for working in fast-paced conditions and a tripod mode helps suppress subtle vibrations from the ground when working on a support system.
• The silent wave motor offers fast, quiet and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focus design is also used, where only groups of internal lenses move during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use, and to promote faster focusing speeds.
• The dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy lens cylinder benefits the use of the lens in adverse conditions.
• A removable tripod collar with the lens is included for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical pull orientations.
• The specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability which is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous firing speeds.
