Powerful hybrid performance, compact design

The PANASONIC Lumix G97 mirrorless hybrid camera with 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 lens enhances the versatile Micro Four Thirds Lumix G95 camera with USB-C power and data connectivity, a higher resolution rear OLED touchscreen and Bluetooth 5.0 for faster and more reliable wireless connectivity. Retaining the 20.3 MP Live MOS sensor, five-axis Dual IS 2 image stabilization and 4K UHD video of its predecessor, the Lumix G97 is an attractive tool for hybrid photographers looking for powerful performance in a compact design.

20.3 MP digital Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine

Optimized for high-speed, high-resolution imaging, the G97 features a 20.3 MP Light MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor and an enhanced Venus Engine processor to create sharp, detailed still images and 4K UHD video. This configuration maximizes resolution and keeps noise to a minimum, enabling the use of sensitivities up to ISO 25600. It is also fast, enabling continuous shooting speeds of up to 9 fps with AF-S and 6 fps with AF-C.

4K UHD video recording

To complement the camera's still image capture capabilities, 4K UHD video can be recorded at up to 30p with 8-bit color depth and 4:2:0 sampling while recording internally. Alternatively, external recording via micro-HDMI with 4:2:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color depth is supported. V-Log L is pre-installed on this camera and is used to capture a flat, neutral gamma curve well suited for grading. Slow motion video is available with support for 60 fps in Full HD resolution. In addition, a 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm microphone input are available for enhanced audio capture.

5-axis image stabilization and Dual IS 2

For maximum sharpness when shooting handheld, Dual IS 2 combines the G97's 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for up to five steps of camera shake along with a wider range of motion types to generate sharper, clearer images. Dual IS 2 requires the use of OIS-compatible Lumix lenses

Body design and wireless connectivity

A large OLED Live View viewfinder has a high resolution of 2.36 million dots and 0.74x magnification for eye-level composition.

The 3.0" OLED rear monitor offers enhanced image composition and reproduction power and now has a resolution superior of 1,840,000 dots. Its free-angle, tilt and swivel design allows viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touch screen, allowing intuitive menu navigation and control of settings.

Constructed from magnesium alloy with a die-cast frame, the G97 features a durable design that also incorporates extensive sealing on joints, dials and buttons to make it splash and dust proof.

The lithium-ion battery delivers approximately 290 shots per charge or approximately 1050 shots per charge when operating in LVF power-saving mode. In addition, the battery can be charged in-camera via the new USB-C port or via AC power.

Built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity and new Bluetooth 5.0 low energy technology enable wireless image sharing and remote control of the camera from paired smartphones and tablets. Bluetooth LE also enables constant connection with your mobile device, allowing features such as geolocation and automatic image transfer. The new USB-C port also enables higher data transfer speeds with a wired connection.

4K photography modes

Taking advantage of the G97's video recording capabilities, three still image capture modes are available to record continuous 8 MP still images at a shutter speed of 30 fps:

Burst: this mode will allow you to record continuously, making it ideal for situations where you need a fast frame rate to capture the best moment.

Pre-burst: this mode is ideal for those times when you are unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record images one second before and one second after pressing the shutter button to give you 60 frames to choose from.

Burst (S/S): this mode follows the video recording process more closely and allows you to play back your video, pause it at the chosen moment and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame of the video and save it as a single 8 MP frame.

Depth-of-field AF system from 49-area defocusing

To accelerate autofocus performance, Depth-From-Defocus (DFD) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focus position, enabling continuous shooting at up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focusing method benefits both still and video shooting modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock onto moving subjects and ensure accurate focusing. When working with portrait subjects, face and eye detection capabilities make it easy to photograph people and prioritize focus as specifically as on a subject's pupil. Sensitivity and focus speed can be adjusted to further enhance performance with specific subjects. In addition, AF sensitivity down to -4 EV allows you to work in low-light conditions.

To benefit manual focus operation, maximum focus is available that highlights bright contrast edges with a colored outline to quickly recognize your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch operation to focus. MF Assist can also be used to increase magnification up to 20x for more critical focusing on specific subjects.

Lense Lumix G Vario 12-60 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER OIS

The camera body includes this versatile 24-120mm-equivalent wide-angle to telephoto zoom, which is well suited to a variety of photographic applications. This POWER OIS system combines with the camera's sensor-shift image stabilization system, which uses Dual IS, for effective control of camera shake and sharper handheld shots. The lense also uses a trio of aspherical elements and an extra-low dispersion element to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater clarity and sharpness.

Other camera functions

A mechanical focal-plane shutter enables a fast maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 s, as well as a maximum flash sync speed of 1/200 s. An electronic shutter function also enables a maximum shutter speed of 1/16000 s for better performance in bright conditions and at wider aperture settings.

Composite recording with live view is a unique long exposure mode that releases the shutter at designated exposure time intervals and synthesizes parts of the image with high brightness to produce a single well-exposed image. This mode is ideal for high contrast scenes and live view can be used to preview how the exposure of the subject lense is affected over several composite exposures.
