The SONY Alpha A7S digital mirrorless camera features a full-frame 12.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor to enable remarkable video and still image quality with wide dynamic range, low noise, and sensitivity to ISO 409600 extended. At the sensor level This full-frame sensor features a unique design in the gapless lens chip, which incorporates small lenses between neighboring pixels in order to increase light-gathering efficiency and promote higher image quality across the entire sensor plane. The sensor and processor combination also avails a wealth of speed across the camera system, including a maximum continuous shooting rate of 5 fps, support for 4K video recording, and a 25-point contrast-detection AF system fast with sensitivity at -4 EV.

Beyond its still image performance, the A7S is also very adept when it comes to video recording. It is capable of output uncompressed 04:02:02 UHD 4K uncompressed video to an optional external recorder via HDMI, as well as recording full 1080p HD video in the high-quality XAVC S format at 50 Mbps at various frame rates. Expanding the video recording capabilities is support for S-Log2 gamma, which helps expand the effective dynamic range during recording, as well as picture profile options, timecode, and zebra marker display aids. Sound can be recorded in linear AAC / PCM format via the internal stereo microphone, with a built-in headphone jack for on-board monitoring, or via an external microphone.

Rounding out the A7S's imaging capabilities, both a 921.6k-dot 3.0" tilting LCD monitor and 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder are available for monitoring and reviewing. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, with support for NFC, is available, too, for instant sharing of camera images, as well as remote control of the camera from a linked mobile device.

Full-Frame Exmor Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
Incorporated within the sleek body design is a 12.2MP full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, which work together to enable wide dynamic range with minimal noise and remarkable sensitivity. The A7S features a native ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 102,400, which is further expandable to ISO 50-409600. Together with the large single pixel size the 12.2MP sensor offers, this camera is well suited for use in low light conditions.

The sensor design also features a set of next-generation RGB color filters as well as an on-chip gapless lens design. Together, these two technologies enable truly efficient light-gathering capabilities that further reinforce the low-noise, high-sensitivity design. In addition, an anti-reflection treatment has also been applied to the sealed glass of the image sensor to minimize surface reflections, glare and ghosting for rich contrast in neutral full-color images.

The combination of sensor and processor also serve a host of performance-related benefits for capturing photos, including a continuous shooting speed priority rate of 5 fps, or a shooting rate of 2.5 fps with continuous AF. Contrast-detection AF system employs 25 distinct points to acquire fast, accurate focusing at light levels as low as -4 EV to support work in a wide variety of shooting conditions.
Full Pixel Readout with Clean Out HDMI for 4K recording
Line-Skipping has been the Achilles heel of digital SLR video recording and mirrorless cameras since video recording was first introduced. Most full-frame and APS-C cameras have very high pixel counts, which is great for still photography, but makes utilizing the entire sensor technically unfeasible when recording video from the scale down, e.g. a 36 megapixel time-lapse image would require a large more expensive image processor and generate more heat than such a compact body could handle. So traditionally these cameras skip lines during video recording, leading to major aliasing and moiré from large sample gaps, as well as decreased resolution and increased noise. However, the low resolution sensor of the A7S is designed for video recording and features a full sensor readout with no line breaks. This means you will see a sharp image devoid of high aliasing and moiré whether recording at 1080p internally or externally in 4K UHD.

For those times when high quality 50 Mbps XAVC S codec is not enough the A7S is capable of uncompressed 4K UHD output (3840 x 2160) at a color depth of 04:02:02 via HDMI to compatible third party recorders. Or, if recording internally to a memory card the HDMI 1080p can output at 4:02:02 to external recorders or HD monitors that do not support 4K inputs. The full list of supported HDMI output signals is:

  • 3840 x 2160 (30p/24p/25p)
  • 1920 x 1080 (60p/24p/50p)
  • 1920 x 1080 (60i/50i), YCbCr 04:02:02 8-bit/RGB 8 bit
Up to 120 fps high frame rate video recording
In addition to the standard 24p/25p/30p/60i recording formats the A7S is also capable of recording much higher frame rates for slow motion playback, albeit at lower resolutions. 1080p video can be recorded at up to 60 fps using the entire sensor. And 120 fps is possible at 720p using an approximate APS-C size crop center sensor. 120 fps recording allows approximately 5x slow motion when played back at 24p.
Customizable Color Profiles and S-Log2 Gamma
To ensure that the A7S is able to utilize its wide dynamic range during video recording it incorporates extensive customizable color and gamma controls. Users can adjust the gamma value, black level, knee, color level, and more. Also users can utilize the same S-Log2 Gamma curve found in the high-end SONY Cine cameras that squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal then traditional REC709 for greater post-production flexibility.
Flexible timecode options
The A7S has multiple timecode recording options to meet different workflows. It features "mode that only advances timecode during recording, as well as" standard "Record Run Free Run timecode" that advances timecode even when not recording, which can be great for synchronizing multiple cameras at live events. You can also record timecode in both drop frame and non-remote modes. When recording internally the A7S is also capable of timecode output via HDMI. Timecode output is not supported when outputting 4K via HDMI.
Live Video Overlays
The A7S features many of the same real-time visual overlays and assists that professional video users have come to depend on. These include peak focus to aid in manual focusing, zebra markers to help judge overexposure, and an audio level layer for audio mixing. Focus magnification is also available for critical focus control. These are available on the viewfinder and LCD screen.
Audio input and headphone jack
The A7S features a 3.5mm microphone input jack for external microphone compatibility. And for users who need more the A7S also supports the SONY XLR-XLR K1m adapter for recording professional balanced XLR audio signals with phantom power and adjustable mic/line inputs.
For listening without the A7S features a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as real-time audio levels for visual reference.
Body Design
Revolving around a compact and sleek body design, the A7S features both a large rear LCD monitor as well as a bright electronic viewfinder. The 3.0" 921.6k-dot Xtra Fine LCD rear features a tilt design (up to 90° and down to 45°) to benefit working from both high and low angles. Also benefiting visibility with the rear monitor is the incorporation of WhiteMagic technology, which noticeably increases brightness for better viewing in sunny conditions. When shooting at eye level, the 0.5" OLED XGA 0.5" electronic OLED viewfinder features 0.71x high magnification and 2.36 million-dot resolution for accurate monitoring capabilities.
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC technology
Wi-Fi connectivity enables the A7S to instantly share images to mobile devices for direct online sharing to social networks, via email, and to dark storage locations. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, enabling one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex assembly is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera shutter.

In addition, PlayMemories camera apps are also supported via the built-in free Wi-Fi connection, and you can customize camera functions based on specific photographic styles. Applications are tailored to creating portraits, detailed close-ups, sports, time lapse, time lapse, motion shooting, and other types of images.
