The K-50 PENTAX has excellent basic specifications that rival many competing superior* class models, such as high-speed continuous shooting at 6fps, ISO sensitivity up to 51200, and an accurate autofocus system that effectively tracks a moving object/subject. This means that beginner DSLR users and family causal photographers can enjoy high-quality digital photography with very little effort. In addition, the K-50 offers dustproof and weatherproof body construction, ensuring solid performance under the most demanding outdoor shooting conditions, reducing the need for camera maintenance/cleaning. It also offers a wide range of advanced photography features, such as Full HD video recording and a variety of creative tools, such as digital filters, to suit different photographic needs. It can also be powered through the use of AA batteries**, in addition to the rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

It was launched simultaneously with the K-50's body, two weatherproof lens kits — the smc PENTAX-DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL WR, and smc PENTAX-DA L 50-200 F4-5.6ED WR — to increase the reliability and safety of the K-50's imaging system.

The K-50 is also available in 120 colors of different variations. The custom color setting system has been very popular as an elegant and unique way to customize the camera among users PENTAX, in order to express their own style through a camera system with an original design.

High resolution, high sensitivity shooting up to ISO 51200

The K-50 incorporates a newer CMOS image sensor with a large image capture area of 23.7mm by 15.7mm, which ensures high-speed data reading. This image sensor pairs with the PRIME M — the same high-performance imaging engine built into superior -gamut models — to provide high-resolution digital images with rich color gradation with 16.28 effective megapixels. The K-50 also offers the possibility of shooting at high ISO sensitivity up to 51200, allowing the photographer to capture beautiful night images without the help of a tripod.
