Combining the tradition of a DSLR with contemporary multimedia capabilities, the LEICA S3 is a medium format camera characterized by its flexible feature set with no workspace and its integration into a well-developed system. With a reshaped 64MP 30 x 45mm CMOS sensor, the S3 offers high-resolution still shots along with a 15-stop dynamic range and a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-50000 to suit working in a variety of conditions. The sensor design also omits an optical low-pass filter for a high degree of sharpness and clarity. In addition to stills, the sensor also enables DCI 4K and Full HD video recording using the full width of the sensor for a distinct medium format look.
Complementing the imaging capabilities, the S3 retains familiar design traits from previous S-system cameras, including a large 0.87x-magnification pentaprism optical viewfinder with a high viewpoint for comfortable viewing. Alternatively, a 3.0"921k-dot rear LCD is available for live shooting and image review, and a status LCD superior can be used to quickly review shooting settings. Another distinction retained is support for the unique dual shutter system, which allows work with the camera's focal plane shutter or select lens center shutters for flash sync up to 1/1000 sec. In addition, the S3 incorporates Wi-Fi connectivity for use in conjunction with the LEICA PHOTOS app for remote camera control and wireless image sharing between the camera and a linked mobile device.
LEICA ProFormat 64MP sensor and video recording
Featuring higher resolution, the S3 has a 64MP 30 x 45 mm CMOS sensor for a high degree of clarity, sensitivity and a wide dynamic range rated for up to 15 stops. This "LEICA ProFormat" sensor also omits an optical low-pass filter from its design in order to achieve the highest possible sharpness. Beyond resolution, the updated design also enables a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-50000 and supports continuous shooting up to 3 fps. On the focusing side, a predictive phase-detection autofocus system is fast, quiet and benefits the tracking of moving subjects through the use of a single cross-type center point.
Beyond still image shooting, the updated sensor also enables impressive video capabilities, and supports DCI 4K recording at 24 fps and Full HD at up to 30 fps, with both formats capable of making use of the full width of the sensor. An external microphone can be used via the 3.5mm port and external Full HD recording is supported via HDMI Type-C with 8-bit 4:2:2 color sampling.
Design
