The ECM-B10 performs digital processing of the signal to the sound captured by its four high-performance microphone capsules, using beamforming technology. This allows users to customize how audio is recorded by increasing the sensitivity of the microphone from different directions. The microphone offers three types of directionality in a single product, allowing users to easily choose between superdirectional, unidirectional and omnidirectional.

When using superdirectionality, the microphone picks up sound from a narrow field in the front and eliminates sound coming from other directions. The superdirectionality setting is a great option for interviews, selfies and other situations where the range of sound pickup is limited to a very narrow angle.

The ECM-B10 also offers unidirectional sensitivity that eliminates sound from behind while capturing front sound with great amplitude. This option is ideal for recording conversations between multiple people.

For greater flexibility, the user can also choose omnidirectional sensitivity, which picks up sound equally from all directions and is ideal for recording surrounding sounds.

The ECM-B10 delivers crystal clear sound pickup with effective noise suppression. Using digital signal processing within the microphone itself, the ECM-B10 efficiently reduces noise to capture clearer sound and achieve a more efficient post-production workflow by requiring less audio editing. The ECM-B10 connects with cameras that are equipped with an MI (Multi Interface) hot shoe, either analog or, for best results, cameras with a digital audio interface[i], to transmit sound directly as a digital signal that delivers high-quality recording without degradation. In addition, the microphone's shock and vibration suppression design effectively eliminates noise from low-frequency vibrations, while its wire-free design prevents noise generated by them. A windscreen is also supplied that minimizes ambient noise, making it easier to pick up crystal clear audio even when shooting outside.

The ECM-B10 converts analog sound to digital within the microphone body and performs digital signal processing using SONY's proprietary algorithms, enabling three directional pickup patterns as well as noise reduction. Digital conversion in the body also helps reduce noise inside the microphone.

Direct streaming of digital audio to the camera eliminates signal degradation, providing pristine in-camera audio recordings without the noise and hiss common to analog preamplifiers found in many cameras.

A simple digital/analog switch also provides compatibility with a wide range of cameras using an analog interface. The ECM-B10 is compatible with a7R IV, a7C, ZVE10 cameras and other MI (Multi Interface Shoe) SONY products that support digital audio.
