Using a 24.2MP CMOS sensor in DX format and an EXPEED 4 image processor, the D3500 provides a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600 to suit work in a variety of lighting conditions, and the sensor-processor combination also provides continuous shooting of 5 fps rate as well as Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps. The sensor design also omits an optical low-pass filter to achieve greater sharpness and resolution of photos and videos.

Complementing imaging capabilities, the D3500 also features SnapBridge, which uses Bluetooth connectivity, to share images wirelessly on your mobile device, including automatic 2MP image sharing between the camera and your mobile device. The lightweight camera body incorporates a 3.0" 921k-dot LCD display for live view monitoring and image review and, for early DSLR owners, the D3500 also features a useful Guide Mode to help achieve specific looks or photographic techniques, such as how to produce shallow-field images in a useful way, step by step. Ten different special effects are also available on the camera to creatively refine the look of stills and movies.
