Nikon is pleased to announce the development of the first flagship camera for NIKON's Z-mount: the Z9 NIKON Camera. The launch of the full-frame mirrorless camera ( NIKON FX format) is planned for 2021 and represents a significant leap in technology and performance.
The Z9 NIKON Camera brings together revolutionary NIKON technologies to deliver the best performance for still images and video in NIKON history. It uses a newly designed FX format stacked CMOS sensor and a new image processing system. In response to the growing needs of professionals, advanced level amateurs and filmmakers, the Z 9 enables 8K video recording, as well as other video specifications that meet diverse needs and workflows.
By purchasing NIKON Z9 will offer users an unprecedented experience thanks to its outstanding performance and functionality, which surpasses those of previous digital and mirrorless SLR cameras.
With speed, image quality and connectivity, the NIKON Z 9 is a professional-grade camera characterized by its newly developed sensor, advanced AF performance and high-resolution 8K video recording. Its first flagship mirrorless camera, the Z 9 stands out as a camera that appeals to photographers and filmmakers working in a wide variety of applications.
The core of the Z 9 is the newly developed 45.7 MP FX format BSI stacked CMOS sensor. Its stacked design offers fast reading speeds and helps reduce the blind, and the BSI design contributes to impressive clarity and minimal noise when working with higher sensitivities. At 45.7MP, it's also a high-resolution chip that benefits landscape, portraiture, and other detail-oriented genres, plus it allows you to record videos at resolutions up to 8K. The full-frame BSI design is also known for its exquisite color and detail reproduction, and this sensor offers a native range of ISO 64-25600, which can be expanded to ISO 32-102400.
Complementing the sensor is an advanced processing engine, the EXPEED 7, which offers speeds about 10 times faster than a Z 7II. This engine works in tandem with the stacked sensor design to achieve incredibly fast AF speeds, burst firing rates, high buffer capacity, smooth video performance, and fast handling in every way.
Relying on the speed and stacked design of the sensor, the Z 9 completely forgoes a mechanical shutter and uses only one electronic shutter for all capture modes. The sensor's speed allows recording up to 1/32,000 seconds and the stacked structure reduces motion distortion for accurate representation of fast-moving subjects such as golf clubs, baseball bats and cars. In addition, despite the absence of a mechanical shutter, the flash synchronizes up to 1/200 sec. it is still supported, as well as high-speed synchronization functions.
By removing the mechanical shutter, the Z 9 can also operate completely silently and there is no need to worry about wear or breakdown of the mechanical shutter. A shutter release sound can be added to become aware when a photo is being taken, and the volume can be adjusted to suit different work scenarios.
Covering the entire sensor area, the Z 9 uses a 493-point phase detection AF system to achieve fast and accurate focusing performance. This system benefits from the high-speed communication of the Z interface along with the sensor speed that allows AF readings to occur at a speed of up to 120 fps. This focusing system also supports working in low-light conditions with a Starlight mode that allows focusing up to -8.5 EV to greatly benefit astrophotography, concerts and other night shooting applications.
Using a new algorithm and deep learning technology, automatic subject detection can now recognize nine distinct types of subjects, ranging from humans to animals to airplanes to bicycles. When working in auto-area AF, these subjects will automatically detect, focus, and follow to ensure sharp focus when the subject moves through the frame. Eye detection AF, specifically, has been tuned to improve accuracy and refined recognition of eyes at the scene, regardless of how small or large they are within the image frame.
The Z 9 also sees the debut of 3D tracking mode on a mirrorless camera NIKON. This popular focus mode of NIKON DSLRs is combined with subject detection capabilities to fix fast- and erratically moving subjects that move in parallel and perpendicular to the camera's axis. In addition, there are also three dynamic area AF modes, with a range of focus area sizes, to suit capturing a wider variety of moving subject types.
Combining high-end photographic attributes, the Z 9 is also the most capable video camera NIKON, with a variety of resolutions and frame rates available up to 8K. With full pixel reading, 8K 30p UHD video can be recorded with continuous shooting possible for about 2 hours and 5 minutes.
Full-frame 4K recording is also available, up to 120p for slow-motion playback. With an 8K area, it is possible to record in 4K UHD with oversampling up to 30p to increase sharpness and detail. In addition, high-resolution frame captures can be recorded in-camera from 8K and 4K videos, to produce 33MP or 11MP still images, respectively.
Internal recording with 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling is possible on ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 codecs, and H.264 and 4:2:0 colors can be used depending on workflow needs. To get more latitude when performing color grading in the publication, there is also a 10-bit N-Log configuration, as well as a flat color profile. In addition, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) can be used to create HDR-ready content directly from the camera.
Real-Live Viewfinder is an advanced EVF that uses a 3.69m dot OLED panel with adjustable luminance up to 3000 cd/m2 for clear visibility in bright conditions. This EVF also works in conjunction with dual-flow technology for blackout-free viewing when shooting continuously.
For the first time in NIKON, the Z 9 incorporates a 3.2- 2.1 million dot four-axis tilting TOUCH LCD that better supports working from high and low angles, regardless of whether shooting in landscape or portrait orientation. The four-way tilt design of this display allows for easier viewing from a variety of positions and the orientation of the user interface will also change depending on how the camera is held.
Dual CFexpress Type B memory card slots allow you to save files flexibly and promote high-speed reading and writing to keep up with fast continuous shooting and high-resolution 8K video recording. Both slots are also compatible with XQD memory cards.
Optimized for a professional workflow, the Z 9 is characterized by its ergonomic form factor and the inclusion of a vertical grip to easily switch between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Built to the same dust and moisture resistance standards as the D6, the Z 9 has a rigid and highly durable magnesium alloy chassis that manages to be 20% smaller than the DSLR's previous flagship body.
The included EN-EL18d battery offers approximately 700 frames per charge. The Z 9 is also compatible with other batteries in the EN-EL18 series.
Vibration reduction in the body now supports Synchro VR to achieve up to 6 stops of camera motion compensation when used with selected Z lenses.
The VR safety lock secures the sensor and VR mechanism in place to prevent damage caused by movement during travel.
To help reduce dust reaching the sensor, the Z 9 incorporates a sensor protector that protects the sensor surface when changing lenses. For additional dust prevention, there is also a layer of fluorine and dual electroconductor in the optical filter that covers the sensor.
Backlit buttons offer easier navigation and button recognition when working in low-light conditions.
Voice memo function to record short notes while shooting.
Matching professional build quality, the Z 9 is equipped with a variety of connectivity options to suit various workflow needs:
mobile app
Full-size HDMI port for sending video to an external recorder or monitor
USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port supports tethering, data transfer and battery charging on the camera
Ethernet port supports 1000BASE-T wired LAN connection for transferring files via FTP
10-pin port offers extensive accessories and remote connectivity
PC sync port for flash sync
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) allow wireless file transfer, remote control of the camera via a mobile device and works in conjunction with the NX Mobile Air app for file management.
GNSS for in-camera geotagging and recording location information while shooting
