With super-telephoto range in a portable design, the NIKON NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S is a versatile zoom ideal for sports and wildlife applications. Covering a wide telephoto range, the lens manages to remain relatively light and compact, making it also ideal for travel, and incorporates Inner Balance technology that maintains stability by tracking moving subjects and shooting over a gimbal head.

Optical design

• With a combination of two Super ED glass elements and six ED, chromatic aberrations and color stripes are effectively removed throughout the zoom range for remarkable clarity and color accuracy.
• Arneo and Nano Crystal layers are used to prevent ghosting, reflections and flashes in order to achieve better contrast and clarity when working in bright lighting and backlight conditions. The nanocrystal layer controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO layer controls incidental light from a vertical direction.

Autofocus and vibration reduction

• The multifocus system incorporates two independent AF control units, which are synchronized, to offer an especially fast and accurate focus throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepper motors, which offer surprisingly smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well suited to both still image and video applications.
• It is also possible to override full-time manual focus and an internal focus design is used, where only groups of internal lenses move during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and promote faster focusing speeds.
• The minimum focusing distance of 2.5', along with a maximum magnification of 0.38x, benefits working with foreground subjects.
• Image stabilization with Vibration Reduction helps reduce the appearance of camera movement by about 5.5 stops to better allow manual shooting in low-light situations.

Design

• The short zoom range rotation of only 80° allows for quick switching between positions from 100mm to 400mm.
• The updated zoom design prevents lens slippage, regardless of whether the lens is pointing up or down, without having to adjust torque or tension settings.
• The programmable control ring is set, by default, to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
• The integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture settings, focus distance, and depth of field figures directly on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
• Two assignable L.Fn buttons work in conjunction with the camera-based Fn buttons to provide perfect points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
• The dust- and moisture-resistant lens body, along with a fluorine front coating, benefits the use of the lens in adverse conditions.
• Inner Balance technology helps maintain a constant center of gravity when changing the zoom position, offering greater stability when tracking moving subjects with a gimbal head.
• The tripod's swivel collar offers mounting stability when shooting on a monopod or tripod.
• Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the scope of this target.
