Nikon D780 Body DEMO

Combining a contemporary imaging approach with traditional form and function, the D780 NIKON is a versatile DSLR that excels in both photography and video applications. With a 24.5MP full-frame CMOS sensor, high-resolution stills and video recording are possible, and the sensor features a BSI design for clarity and reduced noise levels to suit work in a variety of lighting conditions. This sensor also allows for a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800, along with a fast shooting speed of 7fps with the viewfinder or 12fps in live view. This sensor also enables 4K UHD video recording at up to 30fps using full-frame or cropped areas. Full HD recording up to 120fps is also available, along with integrated N-Log Gamma and HLG settings for refined color control.

Complementing the image, when working with the viewfinder, a 51-point phase detection autofocus system is available, including 15 cross-type points for greater accuracy in low-light conditions. When working in live view or recording video, a 273-point hybrid AF system is used that combines phase detection points on the sensor and a contrast detection system for fast performance and excellent subject tracking, including support for eye detection AF.

In essence, the D780 builds on the familiarity and tradition of a DSLR, which includes a 0.7x magnification pentaprism optical viewfinder, along with a large 3.2" 2.36m dot touchscreen LCD display. Dual UHS-II SD memory card slots offer flexibility Storage and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth also enable wireless file transfer along with remote control of the camera from a mobile device.

  • 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor with FX format and EXPEED 6 processor

Chosen for its versatility, the 24.5MP full-frame CMOS sensor provides adequate resolution, fast read speeds, and impressive low-light performance. Its BSI (backlit) design, together with the EXPEED 6 image processor, helps to achieve especially clear results with reduced noise levels to suit work with the full native sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. For working with moving subjects, a continuous shooting speed of 7 fps is available when using the optical viewfinder, but when working in Silent Live View mode, it is possible to shoot up to 12 fps in RAW or JPEG format.

  • Multi-CAM 3500 II 51-point AF sensor

When working with the optical viewfinder, the Multi-CAM 3500 AF sensor II uses 51 phase detection points to capture focus quickly and accurately on subjects. This system is sensitive down to -3 EV and also features 15 cross-type points for even greater accuracy in low-contrast situations. Taking advantage of the use of telephoto lenses and teleconverters, 11 of the focus points are also sensitive to an aperture value of f/8. 3D tracking, a part of the intelligent scene recognition system, also works to benefit the focus maintained on moving subjects for greater accuracy when shooting at high continuous shooting speeds.

  • 4K UHD video recording

In addition to still images, the D780 uses the combination of sensor and processor to obtain highly capable video performance. 4K UHD recording is possible using the full-frame area or a DX crop area at 30p, 25 or 24p frame rates and Full HD 1080p video recording also supports up to 120p for slow-motion playback. Files can be saved to the camera's memory cards or as an uncompressed file on an optional external recorder via the HDMI output.

To complete the video capabilities, the D780 also integrates N-Log gamma to capture flat-looking images that maximizes dynamic range and color grading control during post-production. HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) can also be used to produce HDR content. Other additions are the ability to generate high-quality 10-bit data via HDMI and an electronic VR feature for smooth manual capture. Maximum focus can be used to benefit manual focus control and a zebra stripe option is also available to help detect overexposed areas within the frame. Audio recording can be handled using the built-in stereo microphone or an optional external microphone can be added via the 3.5mm stereo jack for further control over quality, and live monitoring is possible via the headphone jack.

In addition, beyond video recording, time-lapse recording is also possible on the camera, with the ability to record 2MP stills at 120fps.

  • 273-point hybrid AF system

When working in live view or when recording video, a hybrid AF system is used that features 273 phase detection points on the sensor, covering approximately 90% of the image area. This helps achieve fast and accurate focusing performance for both still images and video, and also features sophisticated subject tracking technologies, including eye detection AF. This focusing system works in low light down to -4 EV, or up to -6 EV in dedicated low-light AF mode for still images.

  • Body design
  1. A bright pentaprism optical viewfinder covers 100% of the frame at 0.7x magnification.
  2. The large 3.2" 2.36m dotted rear LCD screen features a tiltable design to adapt to work from high and low angles. It's also a touchscreen and allows intuitive control over playback, menu navigation, and touch AF and touch shutter functions.
  3. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable wireless file transfer and remote camera control from linked mobile devices via the NIKON SnapBridge app.
  4. The two SD memory card slots support the UHS-II standard for fast read/write speeds and allow for more flexible file storage, such as overflow recording and file duplication in the camera.
  5. The EN-EL15b lithium-ion battery provides approximately 2260 shots per charge.
  • Scene recognition and exposure metering system

The intelligent scene recognition system with 3D Color Matrix Metering III uses a 180,000-pixel RGB sensor to evaluate and analyze all aspects within a scene, including brightness, contrast, subject distance, and scene colors, to quickly determine accurate exposure and white balance setting to best represent the scene at hand. The information collected is also compared to onboard reference images to ensure consistency from one image to another with respect to exposure, white balance, i-TTL flash settings and subject tracking AF performance.
