A high-resolution upgrade from the original fp, the SIGMA fp L is a compact, modular mirrorless camera that features a new 61MP full-frame sensor, improved autofocus performance, and a versatile feature set that suits both photography and cinematic applications.

Identical in shape to the first fp, and maintaining accessory compatibility, the fp L is small enough to disappear on a platform for cinematic uses or serve as a highly portable option for travel photography. The improved sensor and focus greatly benefit the use of photography while maintaining the same impressive video recording capabilities for a professional cinema workflow.

The new 61MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor adapts to capturing high-resolution still images and recording 4K UHD video with 12-bit raw output when recording externally. The BSI design of the sensor achieves a low noise level and offers a sensitivity range of up to ISO 25600 to work in low light conditions. The sensor design also now includes an on-chip phase-detection autofocus, which greatly improves focusing speed and accuracy, especially when tracking moving subjects.

Beyond sensor upgrades, the fp L also features the ability to receive continuous power via USB-C to benefit extended recording times, such as when taking time lapses, extended clips, or when using the camera as a webcam. The sleek, minimalist design of the camera body incorporates a 3.15" 2.1 million dot rear TOUCHSCREEN and the fp L is also compatible with the EVF-11 electronic viewfinder; an optional auxiliary electronic viewfinder for clear eye level control. A single SD card slot is available for saving internal files and the fp L also supports burning directly to hard drives connected by USB-C, benefiting raw video recording and other large file burning applications.

61 MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor

The standout feature of the fp L is the high-resolution, full-frame 61MP BSI CMOS sensor with a Bayer-style color filter array. The increased resolution greatly benefits photography applications that rely on fine detail and also benefits video recording by improving sharpness by reducing resolution. The BSI design helps achieve accurate colors, soft tones and reduced noise when working in difficult lighting conditions. The ISO 100-25600 sensitivity range adapts to work in a variety of lighting conditions and the dual base ISO configuration ensures even more clean results.

• Despite the use of a more conventional Bayer matrix sensor, SIGMA has used its experience working with Foveon sensors to inform its decision to include a low-pass filter in the sensor design to help suppress the muaré effect for accurate color reproduction.
• The ultra-high resolution enables the Crop Zoom feature, available for photography and video recording, which allows you to crop the image up to 5x to simulate working with a longer focal length.
• The electronic shutter-only design helps achieve compact camera size and reduces the number of moving mechanical parts. This design results in silent, vibration-free shooting with a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 seconds, yet it only offers a maximum flash sync speed of 1/15 seconds.
• Lossless compressed 14-bit raw still images are saved as DNG files for flexibility in post-production.
• Continuous shooting at full resolution supports up to 10 fps.
• Various aspect ratios, ranging from the standard 3:2 ratios to the more exclusive 21:9, 7:6, and 2:1 ratios, can be used in the camera to help preview different output ratios.

Hybrid autofocus system

In addition to the improved resolution, the updated sensor also incorporates phase detection autofocus support to enable an intelligent hybrid AF system. Using contrast detection and phase detection focus methods, the fp L has greatly improved focusing speeds and accuracy in various lighting conditions, and can also track moving subjects more efficiently. This focusing system has an accuracy of -5 EV and has 42 selectable points that can be changed via the touchscreen interface.

4K UHD video, 12-bit raw output

Maintaining the same impressive video performance of the original fp, the fp L remains a strong competitor for cinematic use due to its versatility in recording methods and raw recording output. Offering UHD 4K up to 30p and FHD 1080 up to 120p internally, or 4K 24p DCI output if recording externally, the fp L can record 8-bit CinemaDNG files to an SD card or output 12-bit CinemaDNG via USB-C or 12-bit raw via HDMI.

• The camera body has an internal stereo microphone, suitable for recording audio from scratch, and a 3.5mm microphone port for working with an external microphone. If you work with the EVF-11 electronic viewfinder, that accessory incorporates a 3.5mm headphone port to monitor audio.
• Making the fp L a unique tool for filmmakers working with other cameras in production environments, the camera can be used with a director's viewfinder mode to simulate the shooting range, frame guide and field of view of other cinema cameras. This feature has been updated with the fp L with wider camera compatibility, and now includes ARRI ARRICAM, ARRIFLEX, ALEXA LF, ALEXA Mini LF, ALEXA SXT, ALEXA Mini, AMIRA, ALEXA65, ALEXA XT; SONY VENICE; and CAMERA OPTIONS RED MONSTRO 8K, HELIUM 8K, DRAGON 6K, EPIC MX 5K, GEMINI 5K and KOMODO 6K.
• For in-camera adjustment over color and hue, color modes can be applied and adjusted directly to the footage. Two new color modes have been added with the fp L: Powder Blue and Duotone.
• Electronic image stabilization helps reduce camera movement when recording videos.

Modular camera design

One of the key features of the fp camera series is the compact and minimalist design that contributes to its modular spirit. Intentionally designed with no grip, no visor and even no shoe, the fp L can be built using accessories to suit a variety of specific production needs.

• Compatible with grips, viewfinders, plates and an accessory shoe to create a camera form factor that suits a variety of intended uses. The body shape of the simple rectangular camera also promotes easier compatibility with third-party cages and other mounting accessories.
• Used in conjunction with other L-Mount Alliance members, the L lens mount is a versatile interface with a mounting diameter of 51.6mm and a flange distance of 20mm for working with a wide range of optics.
• The USB Type-C port supports continuous power and battery charging in the camera, via an accessory power bank for extended shooting times, interval recording, or other cases where longer battery life is required.
• The included BP-51 lithium-ion battery provides approximately 240 shots per charge.
• The HDMI Type-D and 3.5mm microphone ports are also integrated into the body design.
