Featuring a versatile feature set in a particularly compact design, the SONY a6100 is an APS-C format mirrorless camera, suitable for still imaging and video applications. With a 24.2MP CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X processor, it is possible to capture high-resolution still images with a wide sensitivity range and low noise level. The sensor and processor combination also enables 4K UHD video recording along with fast and continuous shooting at up to 11fps for working with moving subjects. They also benefit from fast shooting, real-time AF and subject tracking capabilities help ensure sharp focus on a variety of subject types.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the a6100 features a 1.44m dot OLED electronic viewfinder for clear viewing at eye level. A 3.0" 921.6k dot 3.0" LCD touchscreen is also available and has a 180° tilt design to adapt to work from high, low and front angles. In addition, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow wireless image sharing as well as remote control of the camera from a paired mobile device.

• 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor

A revised APS-C formatted 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor delivers smooth, nuanced image quality with minimal noise and high sensitivity of ISO 100-32000, which can be scaled up to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor features a unique design that uses thin copper wiring, improved circuit processing, and an improved front LSI to increase light-gathering capabilities, reduce noise, and increase read speeds to benefit video recording. The BIONZ X sensor and processor combination also offers a maximum continuous shooting speed of 11fps with AF and AE and enables the output of 14-bit raw files for a wide tonal and color scale.

• 4K UHD video recording in XAVC S format

Internal recording of UHD 4K movies is possible at multiple frame rates of up to 30fps and, depending on the Super35mm recording area and effective 6K resolution, oversampling offers greater detail and full pixel readout, which lacks pixel clustering, is possible for higher image quality with reduced moiré and aliasing. Full HD 1080p recording also supports frame rates up to 120fps, and both resolutions use the 100Mbps XAVC S format contained in an MP4 container with 4:2:0 sampling. High-speed recording at 120fps also allows recording of 4x and 5x slow motion movies with the frame rate set to 30p or 24p. In addition to high-resolution internal recording, the uncompressed HDMI output also allows the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.

4K video recording also takes advantage of the ability to produce 8MP stills during playback by taking a frame capture of a movie and storing it as a separate file.

• 4D APPROACH

Covering almost the entire sensor area, a powerful 4D FOCUS system incorporates 425 on-chip phase detection points along with 425 contrast detection areas for precise focusing in as little as 0.02 seconds. The density of the focus points of this hybrid AF system also enables high-density AF tracking technology, which is adept at tracking moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions. Real-time Eye AF can be used to focus the eyes of recognized portrait subjects (human or animal) and is available for AF-S and AF-C modes. The use of phase detection points also allows the use of A-mount lenses via the optional LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 lens mount adapters with full AF support.

The apt 4D FOCUS system also lends itself to a variety of focusing functions for refined accuracy, including locking autofocus, which maintains focus on moving subjects by using a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject, and expands the flexible point, which employs neighboring focus points to maintain focus on moving subjects, even if the originally selected point loses focus. Autofocus can also be used in conjunction with the Focus Magnifier function for critical focus when focusing on minute details of the subject.

In addition to autofocus, the a6100 also features a Peaking MF feature to benefit manual focus control via sharp highlighted contrast edges for a more objective means of acquiring sharp focus.

• Body design and built-in Wi-Fi
• The Tru-Finder 1.44m SVGA dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a bright, high-resolution medium for eye-level monitoring.
• A 3.0" 921.6k dot LCD touchscreen can be tilted 180° up or 74° down to suit work from high and low angles. The display also incorporates White Magic technology with an RGBW pixel structure to increase brightness to withstand use in daylight conditions.
• The touchscreen design allows access to the Touch Focus control, for immediate focus point selection, as well as the Touchpad function that allows you to smoothly and intuitively select a focus point on the screen while looking into the viewfinder.
• Built-in 3.5mm microphone ports provide greater control over audio during video recording.
• The included NP-FW50 rechargeable Li-ion is rated for approximately 420 shots per charge when working with the LCD.
• In addition to the battery, the a6100 can also be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery. This connection can also be used to charge the battery.
• Built-in Wi-Fi allows the a6100 to instantly share images to mobile devices for direct online sharing to social networks, via email and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, allowing one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; No complex configuration is required. Once connected, the paired mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.

Refined focus performance

The linear motor system uses two independent motors to provide fast, quiet and accurate autofocus and tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural and intuitive linear-response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens cylinder to quickly change the focus mode.

• The internal focus design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a constant overall lens length during operation.
• Suitable for close-ups, the minimum focusing distance is 6.7" with a maximum magnification of 0.15x when using manual focus, or 7.9" with 0.12x magnification when using autofocus.
• Smooth Motion Optics (SMO) suppresses focus breathing to help maintain composition accuracy when changing focus. This lens also supports the breath compensation function on selected Alpha cameras.
