Sony A9 III + 200-600mm

Features of the SONY A9 III

Claiming the title of the world's first global shutter mirrorless camera, the SONY a9 III is a fast and incredibly capable system for sports, wildlife, photojournalism, and much, much more. This revolutionary sensor technology raises the bar for full-frame images, including the ability to shoot continuously raw at up to 120fps and enjoy flash synchronization up to the maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second. Combining the functionality of this 24.6 MP sensor with SONY 's powerful BIONZ XR processor and AI processing unit results in a system that will provide unmatched performance for those looking for an incredibly responsive and reliable camera system.

Global Shutter: A First for Mirrorless Cameras
SONY has introduced the world's first full-frame global shutter mirrorless camera: the a9 III. The use of a global roller shutter is a performance leap over the roller shutter technology used for decades. A global shutter provides near-instantaneous and simultaneous reading of all 24.6 MP, eliminating distortions and other artifacts that plagued roller shutters. It also far surpasses mechanical shutter technology in every way, making the physical shutter unnecessary on the a9 III.

Global blinds help ensure consistent, consistent exposure throughout the frame in all lighting conditions. Flash synchronization is possible at any shutter speed, even at a maximum of 1/80,000 second. Simultaneous reading also avoids banding from certain light sources, such as fluorescent lights. In a gym, outdoors or with mixed artificial lighting, the a9 III will handle it with ease.

Pre-capture and speed boost: don't miss a moment
Along with the key technology provided by the sensor, the a9 III offers new features to unlock the camera's full potential.

  • Pre-capture: The a9 III can be set to start recording images in the buffer when the shutter button is pressed halfway. Users can set it between 0.05 and 1.0 seconds. Pressing the shutter will save these images to the memory card.
  • Speed Boost: Not all shots call for the a9 III's impressive 120fps top speed. With Speed Boost and the C5 button, which is conveniently located near the grip on the front of the camera, users can instantly switch their camera from their usual continuous shooting frame rate to a faster one to make sure their next shot is the right one. Photographers will be able to select various frame rates up to 120fps.

Professional-quality 4K video
While video benefits greatly from the use of global shutter technology (rollable shutters and banding artifacts are eliminated entirely), the a9 III boasts plenty of other video improvements over its predecessor that are worth talking about.

  • The a9 III captures and reduces the resolution of the entire 6K image area to produce high-quality 4K UHD video at up to 60fps. You can also record 4K at up to 120fps without cropping.
  • Record 10-bit 4:2:2 internally using All-I encoding for maximum quality.
  • Raw 16-bit output via full-size HDMI port to a compatible external recorder.
  • S-Log3, S-Cinetone, and other image profiles are available to optimize the image for your workflow and production environment.

Refined body design
With a new generation of Alpha series cameras comes some small tweaks and modifications designed to make the operation of the system more ergonomic. The a9 III features a few updates:

  • Added the C5 custom button to the front of the camera body.
  • The continuous shooting mode dial can now be turned off and the shutter speed can be adjusted in the menu.
  • Improved grip and shutter button has been moved slightly to provide a more ergonomic experience.

The SONY a9 III will improve over time and there are some details on what to expect in future firmware updates:

  • The ability to shoot continuously at up to 120fps when using the maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second.
  • Workflow improvements for IPTC metadata and FTP functions.
  • Addition of C2PA technology from the Content Authenticity Initiative.

Features of the 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 G OSS SONY lens

Intended for hobbyists, enthusiasts and professionals of nature, aircraft, railways and sport shooters, the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lenses from SONY will satisfy many photographers and videographers looking for a little extra reach with their total-frame E-camera mount. As a member of the G line, it is designed for outstanding resolution and sharpness with minimal aberrations, somewhat assisted by the implementation of five ED elements and one aspherical element, plus Nano AR and fluorine coatings. It also features a relatively compact size by using a maximum aperture range of f/5.6-6.3, and is equipped with a Direct Drive SSM autofocus system and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for performance at all focal lengths.

This lens features many other settings and controls to make operation smooth and intuitive for a variety of shooting styles. This includes a zoom pair adjustment ring that allows users to dial in the stiffness of the zoom mechanism. It also has an internal focus system with a minimum focusing distance of just 7.88', as well as a focus range limiter switch for faster focusing. Other physical controls and options include several customizable focus hold buttons, an AF/MF switch, and a removable, rotating tripod mount. In addition, it has a dust- and weather-resistant construction and an eleven-blade circular diaphragm.

  • Sharp G lens resolution over the entire zoom range

The FE 200-600mm features excellent corner-to-corner sharpness across the entire 200-600mm zoom range. To achieve this resolution, it incorporates one aspherical element and five ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements in an improved optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations that can be a problem at super-telephoto focal lengths. In addition, a Nano AR coating is used to reduce flare and ghosting.

  • 200-600mm with extended reach

The FE 200-600mm features a versatile zoom range of 200-600mm with a variable aperture of f/5.6-6.3 (wide to tele). This zoom range can be further extended by optional 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters that extend the telephoto range to a maximum of 840mm or 1,200mm respectively, while maintaining image quality and AF performance. The zoom and aperture range with the 1.4x teleconverter is 280-840mm, f/8-9, and with the 2.0x teleconverter it is 400-1200mm, f/11-13.

  • DDSSM delivers fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus

The FE 200-600mm employs SONY's DDSSM (Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor) system, which has the power and precision needed to drive the heavy focus group, ensuring that moving subjects are tracked reliably and quietly with speed and accuracy. High positioning accuracy means that accurate autofocus is quickly achieved. The advanced DDSSM system is also very quiet, preventing any unwanted noise that could disrupt an unpredictable subject such as a bird at rest or other forms of wildlife.

  • Internal zoom mechanism

An internal zoom mechanism means that the length of the lens remains constant during zooming, maintaining an ideal balance for stable shooting. Since the lens's zoom mechanism is internal, it also has a high resistance to dust and moisture, unlike other super-telephoto lenses that are often prone to attracting dust and moisture into the lens. The internal zoom offers fast zoom operations with a pair of lightweight zoom ring and works well in tough outdoor conditions.

  • Eleven-leaf circular opening

An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism adds to the beauty of the bokeh produced by this lens, making it possible to use the narrow depth of field available at super-telephoto focal lengths to produce images with deep G-lens bokeh.

  • ED glass reduces flare-ups and ghosting

ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements eliminate axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration caused by differences in magnification from the image. The 200-600mm lens incorporates five ED glass elements to maximize resolution and bokeh, while leaving edges with accurate representation with no edges or unnatural coloration.

  • Aspherical lens reduces spherical apertures

An aspherical lens is incorporated to reduce spherical aberration while also reducing the size and weight of the lens. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected onto the image plane. This is due to differences in refraction at different points in conventional spherical lenses that degrade image quality in large aperture lenses. Specially shaped "aspherical" elements near the diaphragm restore the alignment of light rays in the image plane, keeping sharpness and contrast high, even at the maximum aperture, and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing the overall size and weight.

  • Nano AR Coating

Original SONY Nano AR Coating technology minimizes reflections and ghosting for dynamic range that achieves realistic gradation and detail with advanced camera sensors. Nano AR coating is applied to the surfaces of inner lenses to effectively suppress reflections that can lead to flare and reflections, significantly improving image clarity and contrast. This regular, precisely defined nanostructure enables precise light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nanostructure.

  • Built-in 3-mode optical steadyShot

Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with three different mode settings allows images to be sharp and in focus at focused super-telephoto distances. Mode 2 offers ideal stabilization for panoramic shots, while Mode 3 offers enhanced viewfinder stabilization that makes it easier to frame dynamic sports or wildlife movement. 5-axis stabilization is available with compatible alpha bodies. Mode 3 is compatible with the latest version of the a9 software. Please refer to the relevant support webpages for information on compatibility with other agencies.

  • Customizable buttons to maintain focus

Customizable focus hold buttons are provided in three locations separated by 90° for easy and instant access when shooting in any orientation. Once you've set the focus to where you want it, by pressing one of the focus hold buttons on the lens barrel, the lens will be locked at that focusing distance. Focus hold buttons can also be customized via an in-camera menu, allowing them to be assigned to a different user-selected function.

  • Rugged Reliability

SONY lens sealing maximizes dust and moisture resistance, providing the reliability needed for outdoor use and in harsh environmental conditions as demanded by professional photographers. In addition, the front lens element features a fluorine coating that helps prevent dirt and fingerprints from sticking, while making it easier to clean if they stick to the surface of the lens.

  • Instant auto/manual focus selection

Instantly and quickly switch between autofocus and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you, or you can decide to take control and manually focus on the exact point you choose.

  • Fluorine front element coating

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that helps prevent dirt and fingerprints from sticking, while making it easier to clean if they stick to the lens surface.

  • Focus Range Limiter

The Focus Range Limit switch allows you to select a limited focus range when the fastest possible focus is required. Three configurations are provided: Full, 133-8'/10-2.4m, and Infinity-33'/10m.

  • MF Linear Response

The focus ring features MF linear response for fine and responsive manual focus control. Manual focus changes linearly in response to the rotation of the focus ring, giving you the immediacy of control needed for fast and accurate manual focusing.
