Sony A9 III + 100-400mm

Features of the SONY A9 III

Claiming the title of the world's first global shutter mirrorless camera, the SONY a9 III is a fast and incredibly capable system for sports, wildlife, photojournalism, and much, much more. This revolutionary sensor technology raises the bar for full-frame images, including the ability to shoot continuously raw at up to 120fps and enjoy flash synchronization up to the maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second. Combining the functionality of this 24.6 MP sensor with SONY 's powerful BIONZ XR processor and AI processing unit results in a system that will provide unmatched performance for those looking for an incredibly responsive and reliable camera system.

Global Shutter: A First for Mirrorless Cameras
SONY has introduced the world's first full-frame global shutter mirrorless camera: the a9 III. The use of a global roller shutter is a performance leap over the roller shutter technology used for decades. A global shutter provides near-instantaneous and simultaneous reading of all 24.6 MP, eliminating distortions and other artifacts that plagued roller shutters. It also far surpasses mechanical shutter technology in every way, making the physical shutter unnecessary on the a9 III.

Global blinds help ensure consistent, consistent exposure throughout the frame in all lighting conditions. Flash synchronization is possible at any shutter speed, even at a maximum of 1/80,000 second. Simultaneous reading also avoids banding from certain light sources, such as fluorescent lights. In a gym, outdoors or with mixed artificial lighting, the a9 III will handle it with ease.

Pre-capture and speed boost: don't miss a moment
Along with the key technology provided by the sensor, the a9 III offers new features to unlock the camera's full potential.

  • Pre-capture: The a9 III can be set to start recording images in the buffer when the shutter button is pressed halfway. Users can set it between 0.05 and 1.0 seconds. Pressing the shutter will save these images to the memory card.
  • Speed Boost: Not all shots call for the a9 III's impressive 120fps top speed. With Speed Boost and the C5 button, which is conveniently located near the grip on the front of the camera, users can instantly switch their camera from their usual continuous shooting frame rate to a faster one to make sure their next shot is the right one. Photographers will be able to select various frame rates up to 120fps.

Professional-quality 4K video
While video benefits greatly from the use of global shutter technology (rollable shutters and banding artifacts are eliminated entirely), the a9 III boasts plenty of other video improvements over its predecessor that are worth talking about.

  • The a9 III captures and reduces the resolution of the entire 6K image area to produce high-quality 4K UHD video at up to 60fps. You can also record 4K at up to 120fps without cropping.
  • Record 10-bit 4:2:2 internally using All-I encoding for maximum quality.
  • Raw 16-bit output via full-size HDMI port to a compatible external recorder.
  • S-Log3, S-Cinetone, and other image profiles are available to optimize the image for your workflow and production environment.

Refined body design
With a new generation of Alpha series cameras comes some small tweaks and modifications designed to make the operation of the system more ergonomic. The a9 III features a few updates:

  • Added the C5 custom button to the front of the camera body.
  • The continuous shooting mode dial can now be turned off and the shutter speed can be adjusted in the menu.
  • Improved grip and shutter button has been moved slightly to provide a more ergonomic experience.
  • CFexpress Type-A/SD dual card slots provide versatility, allowing users to use existing media or choose options
  • Faster CFexpress to make the most of the higher speed of the a9 III.
  • The USB-C port now delivers faster USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds of up to 10 Gb/s.
  • 3.2" 2.1m-dot 4-axis multi-angle LCD touchscreen, first seen on the a7R V. This display has a wide color gamut that covers the DCI-P3 space.
  • 9.44-million-dot, 0.90x OLED electronic viewfinder with a maximum refresh rate of 240fps. The a9 III benefits from a top-quality display of up to 120 fps.
  • Ethernet port for advanced networking and data transfer workflows.
  • The optional VG-C5EM vertical grip is designed to match the updated ergonomics of the a9 III, including the new C5 button.

Future Firmware Updates
The SONY a9 III will improve over time and there are some details on what to expect in future firmware updates:

  • The ability to shoot continuously at up to 120fps when using the maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second.
  • Workflow improvements for IPTC metadata and FTP functions.
  • Addition of C2PA technology from the Content Authenticity Initiative.

Features of the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM OSS SONY lens

A super-telephoto zoom that satisfies the intense build requirements of SONY's acclaimed G Master series range of lenses, the new FE 100-400mm GM model produces exceptional corner-to-corner sharpness through the lens's zoom and focus ranges and beautiful bokeh background blur, ensuring the best details are carried out in every subject and scene.

The complex design features 22 lens elements configured in 16 different groups, including a Super ED (Extra Low Dispersion) and two ED glass elements, all of which are working together to minimize chromatic aberration and ensure maximum resolution. The lens also has SONY's original Nano AR coating, which is particularly useful for photographing sports scenes or for wildlife, as it reduces unwanted reflections.

In order to keep up with fast-moving action, the new GM 100-400mm super telephoto zoom lens offers the combination of a dual linear motor and an SSM actuator from Direct Drive, which also ensures precise and quiet operation.

The dual-motor system allows for rapid acceleration of the focus unit to capture the sudden motion that is common with sports and wildlife photography, while high-precision positioning control and a newly optimised AF algorithm ensure that the subject is quickly found and focused. This ensures that the maximum AF performance of a camera like the new α9 is achieved.

In order to meet the demanding demands of customers who want lighter, smaller and portable super-telephoto lenses, the new GM FE 100-400mm weighs in at a mere 1,395 grams (49.3 ounces), making it the lightest in its class and an ideal fit for SONY's wide range of compact cameras.

Functionally, the lens has a zoom torque adjustment ring – a first for SONY α – that allows the user to adjust the torque level on the ring for faster or slower zoom depending on their shooting style. There's also a focus hold button that can also be assigned to a variety of functions, such as focus mode selection, AF area selection, or the popular eye AF lock function.

The telephoto zoom lens is resistant to dust and moisture, and has a fluorine coating on the front lens that makes it easy to remove dust or grease. There's also a removable tripod mount.

Professional Performance & Reliability
The new FE 100-400mm GM lens features optical image stabilization, ensuring that sharp images are captured during manual shooting. It also offers a minimum focus range of just 0.98 meters (3.22 feet), maximizing its versatility in the field, and a 9-blade circular aperture design that produces smooth and beautiful bokeh.
The GM FE 100-400mm is compatible with both 1.4x (model SEL14TC) and 2.0x (model SEL20TC) teleconverters, allowing photographers and videographers to shoot up to 800mm on full-frame cameras and approximately 1200mm (35mm equivalent) on APS-C cameras.

A replacement lens hood (model ALC-SH151) for the new lens will also be available.
