Complementing the imaging assets, the a6400 sports a robust magnesium alloy body and anti-dust functionality that protects the optical filter. The compact profile incorporates a high-resolution Tru-Finder 2.36m-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder for bright, crisp viewing at eye level, and this EVF features a 120fps display mode for smooth tracking of fast-moving subjects. Also available is a 3.0" 921.6k-dot rear touchscreen TFT LCD monitor and tilts 180° up and 74° down to benefit from shots from high and low working angles. The touchscreen design also allows for intuitive control of the touch to focus. In addition, for wireless remote control of the camera, or simply for online image sharing, the built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows connection with a mobile device for intuitive wireless control.

The a6400's autofocus system inherits many technologies from SONY's line of full-frame cameras, including the a9, a7R III and a7 III models. The a6400 features 425 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points that are densely placed across the entire image area, covering approximately 84% of the image area. This high-speed, high-performance tracking AF system is combined with a BIONZ X image processing engine that together allow the camera to gain focus in as little as 0.02 seconds and effectively lock onto the subject, ensuring that even the fastest-moving subjects can be tracked with ease.

The a6400 introduces advanced Real-time Eye AF, the latest version of SONY's Eye AF technology. This capability employs AI-based object recognition to detect and process eye data in real-time, improving Eye AF's accuracy, speed, and tracking performance. In all autofocus modes, the camera now automatically detects the subject's eyes and activates Eye AF with a medium press of the shutter button, and when in AF-C or AF-A mode, your subject's preferred eye (left or right) can be selected as the focus point. Options include Automatic/Right Eye/Left Eye, and the Change Right/Left Eye feature can also be assigned to a custom role. This technology frees the photographer to focus solely on the composition with confidence that the focus will be focused on the subject's eye. Eye AF support for animals will be added in the summer of 2019 via a system software update.

Also making debut on the A6400 is SONY's "Real-Time Tracking". This mode uses the SONY algorithm that includes artificial intelligence (AI)-based object recognition and processes color, subject distance (depth), and pattern (brightness) as spatial information to ensure that all subjects can be captured accurately. In addition, when photographing or videotaping humans or animals, information about the position of the face and eyes is recognized by AI and the subject's eye is monitored in real-time with high tracking accuracy. This can be activated with a simple press of the shutter button, or it can be assigned to a custom function

In terms of overall shooting speeds, the camera can shoot up to 11fps with full AF/AE tracking while using the mechanical shutter, and up to 8fps with full AF/AE tracking while shooting silently. You can shoot at each of these speeds up to 116 standard JPEG frames/46 uncompressed frames, greatly increasing the chances of capturing the moment.

• Advancements in image quality

The SONY a6400 model is equipped with a 24.2MP APS-C image sensor that is paired with an updated BIONZ X processor to provide better image quality and color reproduction in all types of shooting conditions. Standard ISO ranges range up to ISO 32,000 for stills and movies, and can be expanded up to ISO 102,400 for still images, with good noise reduction at medium and high sensitivities.

For time-lapse movie creation, the camera features built-in interval recording that can be set anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999.
