The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is an evolution of the first generation model that gained great acceptance in the market and incorporates several improvements. Topping the list of improvements to the new G2 lens is the addition of TAMRON's patented VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism. The lens maintains the maneuverability of class-leading compact size and weight1 while allowing for more stable shooting.
The optical design has been refreshed from the first-generation 70-180mm F2.8 and achieves uncompromising high image quality throughout the zoom range. TAMRON has also shortened the MOD (minimum distance to object) at the wide-angle end to 0.3m (11.8 inches) compared to 0.85m on the 1st generation (33.5 inches), allowing users to enjoy unique photographic expressions of the lens.

In addition, the new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom features TAMRON's famous VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focusing mechanism, which enables high-speed, high-precision autofocus, with good performance in both photography and video. The new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom is also compatible with specific applications TAMRON Lens Utility and TAMRON Lens Utility™ Mobile™, developed in-house by TAMRON. The software can be used to customize functions based on various shooting styles for still photography and video. The new lens design improves operability and provides scratch resistance. Like the 1st generation, the new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 embodies the aggressive pursuit of compact size and reduced weight. TAMRON achieved class-leading compact size and lightweight design while still offering a consistent F2.8 aperture, 180mm telephoto reach and VC. The filter size is φ67mm, the maximum diameter is φ83mm and the focal length of 70mm is 156.5mm. The total weight is only 855 g (30.2 oz). The new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom offers excellent maneuverability and is well balanced in the camera body. Add it all up, and you have a zoom lens that puts the pleasure of shooting with a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens at your fingertips.

2. Revamped optical design delivers superb performance at all focal lengths
The optical construction of the new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom consists of 20 elements in 15 groups. The design has been completely redesigned and features a generous and effective arrangement of special lens elements, including an XLD (ultra low dispersion) lens element, a hybrid aspherical lens element, three LD (low dispersion) lens elements and two GM (glass molded aspherical) lens elements. These elements combine to effectively control chromatic aberration and other artifacts and deliver uncompromising high resolution throughout the zoom range. BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating is used to suppress ghosting and flare, ensuring the finest details of subjects are captured, even in backlit situations, and providing stunning clarity and contrast. Another feature that everyone likes is the beautiful and soft bokeh effect that only the fast F2.8 aperture can offer.

3. The VXD provides high-speed and accurate AF with greatly improved subject tracking.
The new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom is equipped with a VXD linear motor focusing mechanism that was first used on the 1st generation model. Tracking performance for moving subjects, such as sports and vehicles, has been further improved, maintaining the highest level of high-speed autofocus and TAMRON accuracy. Improved performance ensures that users won't miss decisive moments, whether in still image or video capture. The linear motor also suppresses vibration and noise during AF more effectively than conventional drive systems, making it ideal for taking pictures and videos in environments that demand silence.

4. Equipped with TAMRON's patented VC mechanism
The new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom is equipped with TAMRON's patented VC mechanism. The VC effectively suppresses camera shake that tends to occur when shooting at the telephoto end, when panning to capture moving objects, or during close-up focusing, allowing for stably handheld shooting. It also suppresses the camera shake that often occurs when shooting handheld in low-light conditions, such as dimly lit interiors and nightscapes, greatly expanding the freedom of handheld shooting. In addition, at focal lengths of up to 100mm, artificial intelligence (AI) technology provides vibration compensation with videography in mind.

5. Achieves a MOD of 0.3 m to 70 mm and 0.85 m to 180 mm.
By optimizing the optical design, TAMRON has reduced the MOD from 0.85 m (33.5 in.) in the 1st generation, to 0.3 m (11.8 in.) in the new model. Now users can get a little closer to their subjects and get the most out of the picture with smooth bokeh effects. In addition, with an outstanding maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.6, users can enjoy a distinctive and powerful composition unique to the lens.
