Nano USM

Nano USM is a newly developed lens control system that combines the quiet smoothness of an STM (stepping motor) system ideal for shooting movies, with the speed of the ring-type USM (ultrasonic motor) system from Canon, perfect for shooting sports and action photography, while offering a compact size. The EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM's autofocus speed is up to 2.5x faster* (wide-angle) and up to 4.3x* faster (telephoto) compared to the EF-S18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM model. (Actual speed depends on camera model and shooting conditions)

How Nano USM works

The Nano USM unit consists of an elastic metal body and a ceramic voltage element. By modifying the frequency and phase of the high-frequency voltage applied to the ceramic element, the speed and direction of rotation is controlled. In perfect combination, the frequency and phase control provides a lens focusing movement with a control algorithm ideal for both stills and video.

Power zoom adapter accessory

The Canon 18-135mm Nano f3.5-5.6 EFS IS USM includes new electrical contacts and a gear under the lens to make it compatible with the new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1. This allows easy use of the EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom control with the zoom lever or via Wi-Fi when used with compatible EOS cameras.

Image Stabilizer

The Image Stabilizer unit features a new design and achieves a 4 shutter speed image stabilization effect, according to CIPA standards. It also offers dynamic IS (only works in movie mode), with effective stabilization for shooting movies on the move, e.g. while walking. The image stabilization control of the EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM is optimized for the sensitivity of the corrective optics and the characteristics of the IS unit. This unit also includes a function that distinguishes between normal and panning shots based on the output signals from the vibration gyroscope, and automatically selects the optimal IS mode. In addition, it controls the dynamic IS setting in movie recording mode.
