Image stabilization
Canon's renowned IS technology compensates for approximately three levels with no noticeable increase in image motion blur. This greatly increases the series of circumstances in which photography can be taken with your hands, without having to carry a tripod. The main movement in a particular direction is detected as a conscious sweep, the correction is made in the relevant direction and thus the return movement is avoided.

Ultrasonic Motor
The Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) converts the energy of ultrasonic vibrations into a rotational force to deliver high-speed, precision autofocus, super efficient and virtually noise-free, with perfect maintenance torque to provide fast response and precise stopping. The lens allows continuous manual focus override. The minimum focusing distance of 0.7m across the entire zoom range also makes it the recommended lens for close-up enlargements.

Perfect for digital cameras
The lens coatings and shape have been optimized to eliminate flare and shadows, making the lens ideal for use with digital cameras that may be susceptible to reflections from the recording sensor. When fitted to digital cameras with an APS-C size sensor, such as the EOS 10D, the lens offers a focal length range equivalent to 45-480mm.

Precision optics for high-quality images
Excellent contrast, low distortion and high resolution between corners are evident throughout the zoom range. An EMD (electromagnetic diaphragm) controls the aperture for fast, quiet and high-precision control. The circular aperture diaphragm achieves a pleasant blurred background effect, from a maximum aperture to two levels below.
