Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens

A multi-purpose lens that covers any shooting situation with excellence. This is the premise with which the new Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary, the brand's first zoom designed for mirrorless cameras with an APS-C size sensor. Measuring 65.4 by 74.5 millimeters and weighing 290 grams, it is also the smallest and lightest lens in its class.

• Constant F2.8 aperture and great image quality

The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary covers a focal range from 27 to 75 millimeters in universal stop, with a brightness of F2.8 throughout the travel. This makes it easy to get blurred backgrounds, an ideal resource for portraits and attractive close-ups. Bokeh is smooth and beautiful, and it doesn't distract from the subject in focus.

With an optical scheme in which the elements have been minimized to reduce the weight of the assembly as much as possible, the use of three aspherical elements made of high-precision molded glass results in excellent optical quality.

Using in-camera aberration correction helps to further eliminate optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting. As always, all of this has been made possible by the latest optical design technology employed at Sigma's only optics production site, located in Japan's Aizu region.

• Compact and robust

Despite a constant aperture of F2.8, the lens is remarkably compact, in tune with the great portability offered by mirrorless camera bodies with APS-C sensor. This makes it ideal for general daily use.

Sigma has built the body of the optics with carefully selected materials to keep its weight under control. A type of polycarbonate called thermally stable composite (TSC) has been used in the construction of the barrel, which is sleek and robust and has a thermal conductivity similar to that of aluminum. This ensures stable performance and good operability when used under changing temperatures.

By using metal in part of the internal structure, the parts can be much thinner and have greater rigidity, ensuring that the optics can withstand intensive and frequent use.

• Designed for a wide variety of situations

The new 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary features a very fast and quiet focusing system thanks to the use of a pulse motor that makes it perfectly suited for a wide variety of situations. Being small and lightweight, it can be used flexibly in situations that require high mobility. It is also very suitable for mounting it on a stabilizer, recording video and vlogging.

Precisely with the idea of making the lens as versatile as possible in a wide variety of shooting conditions, Sigma has equipped it with a minimum focusing distance of 12.1 centimeters and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.8, making it ideal for close-ups as well.

In combination with the Sigma fp full-frame pocket camera, the total weight of the set is only 712 grams, thus postulating itself as a very interesting and practical optic for full-frame cameras (using crop mode).
