The main features ofPANASONIC GH5S are:

The Lumix DC-GH5S PANASONIC is a Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera optimized for movie recording and low-light performance, proving that they can take the GH series even further into the video realm. Rotating around a 10.28MP Digital Live MOS sensor, DCI and UHD 4K video recording is possible up to 60p and the large single pixel size also offers impressive low-light performance for an extended ISO 204800, along with Dual Native ISO technology at ISO 400 and ISO 2500. Along with an updated Venus motor, the combination of the sensor and processor also allows for faster read speeds along with 1.3 times lower rolling shutter distortion compared to previous GH series cameras. 4K30p DCI internal recording is available with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling and a full-size HDMI A connector can be used to simultaneously send to an optional external monitor or recorder. The sensor's extended sensitivity range has also been used to promote working with V-Log L and Log Gamma HDR hybrid modes to effectively increase its dynamic range and offer more flexibility when evaluating color during post-production.
Beyond its video prowess, the GH5S isn't far behind when it comes to snapshot capture, either. The sensor and combination of Venus Engine allow you to record 14-bit raw files with a continuous shooting rate superior 12 fps with single-shot AF, or up to 8 fps with continuous autofocus. Borrowing from the video side, 4K PHOTO modes are also available for shooting 8MP frames at up to 60fps. Benefiting still images, the Depth-From-Defocus AF system works quickly and accurately using 225 dedicated AF areas, and is sensitive to the luminance of -5 EV to work in extreme low light conditions.
Beyond the image specifications, the GH5S retains its professional build quality for which the GH series is known. The magnesium alloy body is completely weather-sealed to work in inclement conditions, and physical controls have been improved to facilitate touch control. A large 3.68m dot OLED electronic viewfinder is included for high-resolution eye level monitoring, as well as a 3.2" and 1.62m rear LCD touchscreen with free-angle movement to suit work from high and low angles. -II SD memory card slots are available for flexible file recording and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth wireless connectivity allow seamless image sharing and remote camera control from a mobile device.

  • 10.28MP Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine

Designed specifically for low-light shots and high-resolution video recording, a 10.28MP Digital Live MOS sensor is featured, along with a Venus engine optimized for clean color and texture details along with fast read speeds. By using Multipixel Luminance Generation and Intelligent Detail Processing, you will maximize sharpness and detail, as well as accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions.

The sensor features a multi-aspect ratio design, which allows the use of 4:3, 17:9, 16:9, and 3:2 ratios to take pictures, record DCI and UHD 4K, and to work in anamorphic mode. This unique design allows you to maintain the native viewing angle of a lens despite changing the format of the image. In addition, the sensor-processor combination makes use of high read speeds and suppresses rolling shutter distortion by about 1.3x compared to the GH5 when recording video or working with the electronic shutter.

The sensor's deliberately low-resolution design, and subsequently its larger pixel size, also optimizes it for low-light performance and allows for longer dynamic range recording. Borrowing from PANASONIC's line of video cameras, Dual Native ISO technology is used which sets ISO 400 and ISO 2500 as basic sensitivities for low noise levels. The overall native sensitivity range extends from ISO 160-51200, and can be extended to ISO 80-204800.

  • DCI and UHD 4K video recording

Specifically designed for video filming, the GH5S features a range of versatile and capable video specifications, including the ability to internally record 4K DCI at 60fps and 150Mbps with 4:2:0 8-bit Long GOP; 30 fps and 150 Mbps with 4:2:2 Long 10-bit GOP; and 24 fps and 400 Mbps with 4:2:2 10-bit ALL-I. 4K UHD recording also supports Full HD at up to 240fps for slow-motion playback. A full-size HDMI port is present on the camera for high-quality 4:2:2 10-bit output in all configurations for use with external monitors and recorders.

Optimizing your recording for post-production color adjustment, the GH5S features a couple of gamma settings suitable for capturing a wide dynamic range. V-Log L was pre-installed in this camera and is used to capture a flat, neutral gamma curve suitable for classification. In addition, a High Dynamic Range and Hybrid Log Gamma mode can be used to record greater detail in the shaded and highlighted regions of a scene. Additional image styles are available to provide a more gradable image, such as CINELIKE V and CINELIKE D, as well as an in-camera LUT for easy monitoring. In addition, users will have access to the Overcranking and Undercranking Variable Frame Rate setting that provides speeds up to 2.5 times slower in 4K (60 fps) and 7.5 times slower in Full HD (240 fps). In addition, a 4K anamorphic mode is available, which will allow you to record in a 4:3 ratio suitable for adjustment in post-production.

For greater recording versatility, the frequency of the recording system can be changed between 59.94 Hz (NTSC), 50.00 Hz (PAL) or 24.00 Hz (Cinema) for worldwide use, and there is no recording duration limit for all settings. Three separate video control panels can also be used: shutter/ISO duration, shutter angle/ISO, or shutter/dB duration, to suit the various production needs around the world.

The GH5S is designed to be an expandable system, with multiple options available to help enhance video recording capabilities. Examples of this are the included BNC conversion cable to synchronize timecode settings with an external device for multi-camera configurations; Support LINE input via 3.5mm microphone input to use an external audio device; and the optional XLR microphone adapter that provides XLR inputs and physical controls via a hot shoe connection. Users can also use standard microphones and headphones via the 3.5mm input and output jacks.

  • Continuous recording and Depth-From-Defocus AF system

Beyond just a video camera, the GH5S is also adept at recording still images. Using the unique sensor architecture, low-light capabilities and fast reading speeds make it ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and for photographing fast-moving subjects. For raw 12-bit shooting, and when working with AF-S, it is possible to perform continuous shooting of up to 12 fps, along with a maximum shooting speed of 8 fps with AF-C. For more color information, a 14-bit raw recording setting can also be used, and continuous shooting rates of 11 fps and 7 fps are available.

For accelerated autofocus performance, advanced DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is used to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focus position in as little as 0.05 seconds. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both fixed and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock moving subjects and ensure accurate focus. Sensitivity and speed can be adjusted to further improve performance with certain subjects. It also features 225 AF areas that provide excellent control over where the camera will focus. In addition, by supporting low-light working, the Starlight AF function enables accurate AF performance up to -5 EV.

Benefiting from manual focus operation, peak focus is available that highlights the bright edges of contrast with a color outline to quickly recognize your focus point, as well as Touch Assist MF for touch-to-focus operation.
